It may not be obvious at first but a lighter streak seems to stretch upward from my shadow. Within this streak the short stalks of wheat are hiding their own shadows so it appears brighter than the region either side where some shadow is visible. |

The streak is more obvious from a higher vantage point. Sweeping your eye across the scene also makes it easier to see. A similar effect operates as you look closer to the horizon. In the foreground the stubble shadows are strong but nearer the horizon they are hidden so the overall brightness is higher. |
