Balloon Spectre

While the 'spectre' shadow effect is usually seen in fog it can occur in any diffuse medium.

Here the shadow of a hot air balloon is faintly visible in hazy air. The shadow appears much larger than expected simply because the haze is closer.

When the contrast is greatly increased the extent of the shadow is more obvious. The shadow appears darker at the base because the apparent size of the shadow cone decreases as it falls on more distant haze.
