Total Lunar Eclipse - 3rd March 2007

The composite image below shows the moon in different parts of the Earth's shadow. The top image is just before the start of totality while the bottom image is a couple of minutes after totality ended. The darkening and reddening toward the centre of the shadow, lower right of the centre image, is quite obvious. Had the moon passed centrally through the shadow the eclipse would have been even darker.

The two background stars provided a handy reference for lining up the images, and for showing the moon's motion in just over an hour.

The fully eclipsed moon against the background of stars in Leo. The moon is overexposed so appears whiter than it did to the eye.
