The aureole round the sun, formed by thin cloud, seen reflected in the surface of a pond. This reduced the brightness to a safe level.
Much of the mottling is due to the cloud structure but some is due to rippling of the water.

Never look directly at the sun ! Shield the sun and use proper eye protection against the glare.
