Quite often the fog isn't deep enough to show a full arc. Because it isn't coloured the casual observer would probably miss even an obvious bow section like this one. |
When the fogbow is strong a supernumerary may also be visible inside the main bow, this is much broader than in a normal rainbow. Using a polariser enhances the contrast. |

Because of the delicate balance needed for a good fogbow they may only last a minute or two in one particular fog patch. A hundred metres before this point on the canal towpath there wasn't enough fog to form a bow. Two hundred metres further along the path the fog was too thick and no bow was visible. |
