Iridescence and Corona

Reflected in water Edge of corona

This could easily be mistaken for interference in a thin film of oil on the water. It is an interference effect but it is taking place in thin cloud near the sun.

Zooming in on a bright corona shows fine structure in the cloud and how the corona breaks up into iridescence.

Close to sun Edge of corona

The metallic colours in this display were very striking, but great care was needed because it was close to the sun.

The outer fragment of corona at the lower edge of the cloud gives way to general iridescence.

Never look directly at the sun !   Shield the sun and use proper eye protection against the glare.
