Iridescence near the Sun

Iridescence near the sun Iridescence below the sun

Careful shielding was necessary but this patch of cloud showed strong iridescent colours. The lack of cloud around the sun itself helped to improve the contrast.

The transparent sky also helped to improve the view, the bright specks are insects catching the sunlight.

Iridescence above the sun Strong iridescence near the sun

This small patch of stratus started to show iridescence as it passed above the sun, which was safely hidden by a large bush.

Just 30 seconds later the cloud has drifted into the best position directly above the sun and shows strong bands of iridescence. The wisps of cumulus also show a bit of colour but not nearly as strong as the stratus.

Never look directly at the sun !   Shield the sun and use proper eye protection against the glare.
