Sun Pillar Sequence

I noticed this pillar just before the sun dropped behind the hill and followed it for over 20 minutes.

The first image in this sequence was taken just after the sun dropped below the hill.

The remaining images were taken about five minutes apart and show the sun's motion along the horizon.

The last image was taken when the sun was 1.5 degrees below the true horizon, after which the pillar faded rapidly.

This pillar was quite obvious even in the glare before the sun set below the hill. A furry assistant helped block out the direct sun.

Even when the sun was a degree below the true horizon the pillar was still quite obvious. In some ways it was more striking because there was no glare to hamper the view.
