Scattered afternoon showers give the best chance of a good rainbow. It helps if the cloud base is fairly high and there is a clearing following the showers, most showers here come from the south and west. |
The showers need to be far enough apart to leave large gaps for the sun to shine on the falling rain. When conditions are right the results can be impressive. |

A fast moving shower left behind enough falling drops to catch the sunshine and give a nice clear rainbow. The sun altitude was 16 degrees.

I tried moving to get a different foreground but the left side of the bow had already faded out. The full arc was visible for less than two minutes. |
