Stretched Sundogs

The most colourful sundogs often occur in very thin cirrus. The ice crystals are probably better formed and with less glare from surrounding cloud the sundog tends to show up better.

This sundog is stretched vertically indicating greater tilts in the ice crystals.

Small tilts from the horizontal in the falling ice crystals have extended this bright sundog vertically.

This particular patch of cirrus took several minutes to drift through that part of the sky producing a very bright and colourful sundog.

This bright sundog was visible for just a few minutes while this band of cirrus drifted though. Tilts in the ice crystals stretched it vertically a little bit.
